Early Years Foundation Stage

The goal of early childhood education should be to activate the child's own natural desire to learn
Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) team at St Thomas More Catholic Primary School has constructed a curriculum that is ambitious and designed to give children, particularly the most disadvantaged, the knowledge, self-belief and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. The curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced following the guidance of the new non-statutory framework, Development Matters 2021. It builds on what children know and can do, towards cumulatively sufficient knowledge and skills for their future learning.

We believe that every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. Our aim is for all children to learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.

We know that children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between teachers, parents and carers.
